‘For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor. ‘
In other words, Paul is saying he couldn’t go back and undo all the horrible things he did to the believing Jews before his Damascus road experience because if he did, that would elevate his works (legalism) above God’s grace. And that can never happen. Why? Read on.
I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.’
Plain enough? The moment we try to do something, anything to gain favor with God we take Christ off the cross. And we are cursed (anathema) Galatians 1:8,9.
Remember the letter to the Galatian church was written in response to Judiazers (Acts 15:1,5) that were coming in behind Paul trying to convince Paul’s Gentile converts that they were not saved by faith alone in the finished work of the cross alone but that they needed to be circumcised and keep the law. Sadly, it’s no different today!!! It may not be circumcision but man has added much to Paul’s gospel which then makes it no gospel at all.
